The Ministry of Education confirms that schools will reopen on Monday, May 6, despite ongoing floods nationwide.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, in a circular dated May 2, 2024, reaffirmed the delayed reopening date of May 6, urging parents and institutions to prioritize children’s safety.

Machogu urged parents to ensure children arrive at school on time, acknowledging challenges posed by floods, swollen rivers, and landslides due to heavy rains.

He emphasized prioritizing the safety of learners, teachers, and school communities, guided by weather forecasts from the Meteorological Department.

However, schools severely affected by floods and damaged infrastructure will remain closed, as learning may not be possible.

Machogu highlighted potential health risks from damaged sanitation facilities and tasked Education officials with devising ways to facilitate safer learning access.

Field education officers were instructed to collaborate with local government officials to provide alternative accommodation for displaced learners.

Officials were also directed to oversee resource sharing among neighboring schools to ensure uninterrupted learning activities.

School Boards of Management (BoMs) were mandated to assess flood impacts, convene urgent meetings, and submit reports to County Education Boards (CEBs) and the Ministry of Education.
