Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has accepted the apology of a Ghanaian MP who publicly publicly mocked him last year.

A year ago, Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo compared Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic management to Maguire’s poor performances on the pitch for Manchester United.

Adongo had mocked former United captain Maguire and labelled him ‘the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence.’

“If you are a fan of football, and I was happy to see the jubilation when Ghana won, but there was a player in the United Kingdom, in England called Maguire who was playing for Manchester United,” Mr Adongo said 11 months ago.

“Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. He was seen as the best defender in the world, Manchester United were at the bottom.”

The MP continued berating Maguire who he repeatedly compared to Ghana’s Vice President’s economic sabotage activities.

“He became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents. Mr Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them.”

Earlier this week, after a change of heart, Adongo publicly apologised to the England international for the comments he made last year, hailing Maguire a ‘transformational footballer’ for overcoming his struggles of last season.

But that, however, didn’t stop the MP from launching yet another attack on the Vice-President, with Adongo adding, “As for our Maguire, he is now at the IMF (International Monetary Fund) with a cup in hand.”

“You remember last year I was very quick to compare my big brother Doctor Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire,” he said on Wednesday.

“Mr Speaker, I now apologise Harry Maguire. Mr Chairman, you got very angry when I used your defender as an example. Today Maguire has turned the corner, he’s a transformational footballer. Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United…”

“Mr Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United. As for our Maguire, he is now roaming at the high heavens, with a cup in hand.”

Adongo, not one to let the VP breathe, continued to harangue him at the floor of the House, accusing him of turning elderly Ghanaians into beggars.

“As for our Maguire, the economic Maguire, he was able to get pensioners to leave their homes and come and parade in the streets.”

Now, in the latest twist to this bizarre story, Maguire has publicly accepted the apology of Adongo and even welcomed him to visit United’s home ground in the future.

Replying to a video of the initial apology on X (formerly Twitter), the United defender wrote: “MP Issac Adongo apology accepted . See you at Old Trafford soon,” followed by emojis of a handshake and a smiley face.

After starting none of Manchester United’s first seven Premier League games this season, Maguire has played the full 90 minutes in each of the last five. He also earned starts in both Champions League meetings with FC Copenhagen, scoring the winner at home to the Danish champions.
