Several people are feared dead following a tragic road accident that occurred on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Pap Onditi along the Katito–Kendu Bay Road in Homa Bay County.
The accident, which involved multiple vehicles, left several others injured, sparking an emergency response from authorities and members of the public.
In a press statement released, Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying she had received the news.
The governor confirmed that the crash involved several vehicles and resulted in loss of lives and injuries, though the exact number of casualties had not been officially confirmed by the time of the statement.

“I have received, with deep sorrow and concern, reports of a tragic road accident that occurred earlier today at Pap Onditi along the Katito Kendu Bay Road. involving multiple vehicles and resulting in the loss of lives and injuries to several others,” the press statement read in part.
Governor Wanga conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families, noting that the county was mourning with them during this difficult time. She added that the thoughts and prayers of the county leadership were also with those who were injured, wishing them a quick and full recovery.
“On behalf of the County Government of Homa Bay and on my own behalf, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives, and friends of those who lost their lives in this devastating incident,” she said.

The governor further stated that the Homa Bay County Government was working closely with the Kisumu County Government, emergency response teams, health facilities, and security agencies to manage the situation. She said these teams were ensuring that all injured persons receive the necessary medical care and that affected families are given the support they need during the aftermath of the accident.
Wanga also commended first responders and members of the public who rushed to the scene to offer help before emergency teams arrived. She acknowledged their swift action, noting that such efforts often make a critical difference in saving lives during road emergencies.
In her statement, the governor took the opportunity to urge motorists to be extra careful on the roads, especially during periods of high traffic. She called on drivers to observe traffic rules and remain vigilant, warning that many road accidents are preventable.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and preventable accidents continue to claim precious lives,” she said.
Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
The Katito–Kendu Bay Road is a busy route that connects several towns in the region and is often used by public service vehicles, trucks, and private motorists. Accidents have previously been reported along the stretch, especially during peak travel periods.
