What began as rumours, claims, and propaganda has now been confirmed by the Social Health Authority (SHA).
A section of Kenyans lost their hard-earned money to fraudsters impersonating SHA officials.
In a press statement shared on X on Thursday, November 7, 2025, SHA said it had received multiple complaints from members of the public who had been conned by individuals pretending to be SHA staff.
The criminals promised to help with registration or speed up services for a fee.

Kenyans urged to report fake SHA agents
The Authority warned that its staff do not charge money for registration, nor do they ask for M-Pesa PINs or personal details.
SHA urged affected individuals to report such cases immediately to the police and also to the Authority through the toll-free number 147 or via email at fr***@****go.ke.
“Your trust is sacred to us, and it pains us that dishonest individuals would exploit that trust for their own gain. SHA staff will never ask for money or any personal information,” the statement read in part.

SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi said the Authority remains committed to protecting all Kenyans from such scams while ensuring health coverage registration remains transparent, free, and safe.

Registration is free through official platforms
SHA clarified that all registrations are free of charge and can be done through the official USSD code *147#, the web portals www.afyayangu.go.ke or www.sha.go.ke, or through Huduma Centres, SHA County Offices, and authorized Community Health Promoters wearing branded vests.
Payments for SHA contributions, the statement added, should only be made through the official M-Pesa Business Number 200222 or designated banks communicated by SHA.

Mwangangi further advised Kenyans to be cautious and avoid handing over their phones to strangers claiming to assist with registration.
“Official SHA outreach drives are always announced through verified channels, local authorities, and the media,” she added.
