Siaya County government, through the Department of Social Services, is initiating a registration effort to take inventory of all Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the region.
According to Bondo sub-county PWDs Coordinator Margaret Adhiambo Okech, the goal of this registration is to determine the total number of individuals with disabilities in the county. Okech emphasized that this information will be crucial for guiding policy formulation and budget allocation regarding issues affecting PWDs in Siaya County.
In an interview with Radio Ramogi, Okech explained that to ensure the success of the registration exercise, they will collaborate with community health promoters and local administrators, including chiefs and Assistant Chiefs, to reach all PWDs effectively.
She noted that, similar to the national government’s efforts through the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWDs), the county government aims to maintain its own inventory of PWDs.
Okech also highlighted that during the registration process, they will assess the total number of individuals with professional qualifications. This will enable the county to better facilitate employment opportunities for qualified PWDs. She observed that the employment rate among PWDs in Siaya County remains low, as the qualifications of these individuals have not been previously documented. She believes that this exercise will significantly improve employment prospects for PWDs in the region.
