A tragic shooting incident at Ng’iya Police Post in Siaya County early Sunday morning has left two police officers dead, in what authorities suspect may have been the result of a personal dispute or a mental health crisis.
The incident occurred at around 6:00 a.m. when Constable Martin Mwendwa reportedly shot and killed his superior, Corporal Chesise, who was the officer in charge of the station.
According to police, Mwendwa armed himself with a G3 rifle, entered the corporal’s residence, and opened fire—fatally wounding him in the chest and arms.
Confirming the incident, Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula said officers at the station responded swiftly after the first shots were heard.
Constable Mwendwa attempted to flee towards Ng’iya Girls’ High School, but was intercepted and fatally shot by fellow officers during the confrontation.
While preliminary investigations point to a possible personal disagreement between the two officers, police are also probing the possibility that Mwendwa may have been undergoing a mental health episode at the time of the attack.
“The matter is under investigation, and we are keen to establish the underlying cause. We are not ruling out any possibilities, including psychological distress,” Mr. Wafula said.
The bodies of both officers have been taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation
