Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s league champions Butali Sugar continued their flawless start to the new season with an impressive 3-1 win over Sikh Union at the latter’s Sikh Union Grounds over the weekend.
The hosts drew first blood via a penalty goal by Obare Otoba in the 7th minute but it only took 10 minutes for the sugar millers to level matters courtesy of dangerman Festus Onyango.
Onyango was on the mark once again in the 36th minute before a Calvins Kanu goal two minutes later sealed maximum points for the defending champions.
The duo have now scored three goals apiece and are only two shy of Amira Sailors’ Abraham Mosee Muiruri who tops the chart with five goals.
Third-placed Strathmore University notched their first win of the campaign win a 2-1 home win against Amira Sailors as the game between Kenya Police and Greensharks failed to take off.
In the women’s premier league, leaders Strathmore University Scorpions played out a 1-1 draw with Amira Sailors in a hotly-contested tie at City Park.
Kenyan international Gilly Okumu continued her fine start to the season, finding the back of the net in the 19th minute to collect her second goal in two games.
However, her former employers left it late until the 50th minute to get back into contention thanks to a Diana Anino-penalty goal.
In the Men’s Super League, leaders Daikyo Heroes were 2-1 away winners against Wazalendo Masters as second-placed Parkroad Badgers drew 2-2 away at Mombasa Sports Club.
The result leaves both team level on seven points with Heroes leading the way courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Elsewhere, Richard Abudi scored in the 37th minute to hand Kenyatta University a 1-0 win over Kisumu Youngsters.
In the Women’s Super League, Twinkle Hockey Club continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-0 win over Black Tigresses.
Diana Wanjala opened account for the winners with her strike in the 18th minute before Alice Jokeyo secured the points in the 39th minute.
The other match saw leaders Sliders maintain their iron grip on the title summit with a 2-1 win over Nakuru Women.
The National Men’s League – Western Zone – saw Bungoma leap to the top of the table courtesy of a walkover against Western Jaguars Dev as Kisii Falcons suffered identical 2-1 losses to Nandi Hawks and Bay Club.
In the Eastern Zone, University of Nairobi reigned 2-1 against Kirinyaga Knights.
