Hawaiian singer Irie Love has opened up about her decision to quit drinking alcohol, explaining that the choice was motivated by a desire to live a healthier, more aligned life.
Speaking during an interview with Obinna TV Extra on Monday, December 8, 2025, the soulful vocalist shared that drinking is deeply embedded in Hawai‘i’s social culture, but over time she began to feel that alcohol no longer fit into the lifestyle she was working hard to build.
“In Hawaii, we drink a lot. It’s part of the culture. I felt like when I went into sports after music, I kind of stopped a little bit after my divorce. I just felt like it wasn’t in alignment with what I was doing. I was working so hard to be healthy, and I was drinking all the time. It was just counterproductive.”
Irie Love added that being a musician comes with its own challenges, especially with the party atmosphere that often surrounds performances and events.
She explained that the drinking culture in the music industry can make it easy to get caught up without realizing it.

“Being a musician, I have to be mindful because it’s a party scene, so it’s always easy to get caught up.”
Despite quitting alcohol, the singer emphasised that she has not distanced herself from friends or social gatherings.
“All my friends drink and they are with me all the time, and I go to parties. It doesn’t mean I can’t be around them. And I don’t judge people if that’s what they choose. People have to choose what they want to do with their lives.”
Further, she disclosed that he final decision to stop drinking came after a decisive personal moment.
Irie Love recounted an incident where she had a glass of champagne that triggered a severe headache unlike anything she had experienced before.

“I had an incident where we were drinking champagne, and it gave me a splitting headache that I have never experienced before. So I was praying, ‘What do I need to do to stop the pain?’ and I felt like my ancestors were telling me it’s time to stop—so I did. I listen to my inner guidance more than anything.”
