The Public Service Commission (PSC) has shortlisted six candidates for the position of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). In a statement released on Thursday, September 26, 2024, the PSC noted that these candidates were among many who applied for the position following an advertisement published on March 30, 2023.

The shortlisted candidates are:
– Prof. Dulacha Galgallo Barako
– Gerald Nysoma Arita
– Jane Wangui Kiringai
– Charles Mutuma Ringera
– Dr. Florence Kaki Kinyanzui
– Dr. Habil Okunda Olaka

According to the PSC, “Pursuant to the provisions of Sections 138 of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, the Public Service Commission invited applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya in the print media and Commission’s website on 30th March 2023.”

The six candidates are scheduled to be interviewed on Thursday, October 3, 2024. “Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed at the Public Service Commission, Commission House, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi, on the date and time indicated. Candidates should arrive at least fifteen (15) minutes before the starting time,” the PSC added, listing the required documents for the interview process.

The appointment of the second deputy governor aims to address a gap highlighted by the Office of the Auditor-General. A law enacted in 2015 mandates that the executive team at the CBK consists of the governor and two deputies. However, efforts to appoint a second deputy governor were unsuccessful during the previous administration.

With the departure of Patrick Njoroge and his sole assistant Sheila M’Mbijjiwe, CBK is now moving to comply with this legal requirement.

Currently, Kamau Thugge serves as the CBK Governor, with Dr. Susan Jemtai Koech as his deputy. Dr. Koech was appointed by President Ruto in March 2022 and has a notable background, having held senior positions in both the banking sector and the government. Before joining CBK, she was the Principal Secretary in the State Departments of East African Community, Regional Development, and Wildlife.
