Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has shared that Son Heung-min is working hard to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday’s match against Manchester United. Son was forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury in the 71st minute during Thursday’s 3-0 Europa League victory over Qarabag.
Postecoglou initially expressed uncertainty about the severity of Son’s injury right after the game but provided an update on Friday. The South Korean forward is eager to train on Saturday to demonstrate his readiness for the Premier League showdown at Old Trafford.
“Fair to say the boys are fairly tired, the ones who put in a shift. Apart from Sonny, everybody is okay,” Postecoglou told reporters. “Sonny, I don’t think it’s too bad. He wants to train tomorrow, and we’ll see how it goes and make a decision from there. We’ve got another day up our sleeve to give him every chance.”
If Son isn’t fit in time, Postecoglou has several alternatives for the left wing, including Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski. Germany’s Timo Werner, who came on to replace Son on Thursday, is also an option, while 17-year-old Mikey Moore could make his full debut.
“Timo and Mikey can certainly come into the frame. We have Kulusevski who can play wide as well, so we’ve got some options there, but firstly, we’ll see how Sonny is,” Postecoglou said.
Son’s long-term future at Tottenham has also come under scrutiny, with no talks yet regarding a new contract. His current deal runs out next year, though the club holds an option to extend it by a further year, which they reportedly plan to activate.
Postecoglou emphasized that he wants the 32-year-old to remain at the club, now in his 10th season since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
“I don’t always have the final say, but certainly I like to think my input is significant,” Postecoglou said. “It’s part of a broader discussion around Sonny, but with how he’s performing and leading the club at the moment, I certainly want him to stick around for a while.”
