The recent monsoon storms in Sri Lanka have resulted in tragic consequences, with flash floods, mudslides, and falling trees claiming the lives of at least 14 people, according to the country’s disaster center.

Among the victims were members of the same family who drowned near Colombo, while others were buried in mudslides or crushed by falling trees in various districts.

This devastating weather has affected 20 out of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts, prompting warnings from the Disaster Management Centre for residents along main rivers to seek higher ground. The heavy rains have flooded highways and led to flight diversions at Colombo’s main international airport.

In response to the ongoing weather threats, the government has ordered the closure of all schools on Monday following the weekend holiday. The Disaster Management Centre has also issued warnings of more heavy rains, strong winds, and thunder in the forecast.

The impact of these storms extends beyond human casualties, with wildlife also suffering losses. Last week, seven young elephants drowned in floodwaters in Dimbulagala, highlighting the ecological consequences of the severe weather conditions.
