Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has dismissed rumors circulating that he was arrested by officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). Speaking to the press on Monday, Governor Jama denounced the spread of misinformation and emphasized that no such arrest or operation had taken place at his home.
The rumors surfaced following an EACC operation in Garissa, which saw officials from Nairobi interrogate senior county officials, particularly within the Department of Health, over alleged mismanagement of funds. This sting operation lasted two days.
Governor Jama addressed the media to clarify the situation, stating, “I have no problem with being criticized or my administration being held accountable by government agencies mandated to do so.
However, this should be done in a manner that does not create anxiety and tension in the county.
” He reiterated his commitment to transparency and accountability while condemning the unfounded rumors intended to cause unrest among the residents of Garissa.
“Over the last several days there has been rumor-mongering regarding our issues here in the county vis-a-vis the operation that was undertaken by the EACC, some going to the extent of saying that the governor’s home has been raised, photoshopping things and putting them together,” he said.
“What really is the problem here is the extent of rumor-mongering, lies, and fabrications particularly by the young men and women of our county in the social media. People have really gone out of their way to say things that are far from the truth, Things that are really unwarranted,” he added.
He took issue with individuals who have been targeting him, calling on them to stick to facts and focus on what matters saying that it was normal for EACC to undertake such operations.
“So my request and clarion call to these young men and women is to really focus on what matters. If they have to write something let them write things that made sense or are true for that matter, Things that can be seen to be logical,” he said.
Governor Nathif Jama used the opportunity to call on the youth in Garissa County to engage in productive activities that can significantly benefit their lives. He highlighted the robust Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs developed by the county, which offer youth the chance to acquire essential skills for gainful employment.
Governor Jama emphasized that his administration has equipped TVET centers across the county with adequate instructors and resources.
However, he expressed regret that many youths have continued to shy away from these opportunities and have not taken advantage of the available admissions.
He called for a change in mindset towards these institutions, encouraging the youth to embrace TVET programs as a viable path to employment and personal development.
