At least four people are recovering from injuries after a stray dog attacked individuals in the Runyenjes area of Embu County on Tuesday, March 19, 2205.

According to local reports, the incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. in areas including Kawanjara, Gikuuri, and near Ngarari Junction.

The first victim was a 17-year-old Ena Secondary School student who was on her way home from school at the Kawanjara Market junction when the attack happened.

Nancy Wawira Kariuki, a trader at Kawanjara Market along the Embu-Meru Highway, described the chaotic scene.

“At around 6:10 p.m., as students were heading home, a stray dog attacked the girl. She sustained injuries to her right hand and thigh and was bleeding,” she said.

Kariuki added that she helped rush the girl to Runyenjes Level 4 Hospital. However, due to limited services, she was transferred to the nearby Hunter’s Medical Centre, where she received immediate first aid.

Shortly after, two women from the Gikuuri area arrived at a nearby clinic seeking treatment after being attacked by the same brown stray dog. Both women were administered anti-rabies injections and are expected to complete a full course of treatment.

Additionally, efforts are underway to locate a fourth victim who was reportedly attacked while working on her vegetable farm in Gikuuri. Unconfirmed reports suggest she was first treated at a nearby chemist before being transferred to another hospital.

Residents have expressed growing concerns over the increasing number of stray dogs in the area and are urging authorities to take immediate action to prevent further attacks.

“We need urgent action. School-going students, as well as other residents, are now living in fear of stray dogs. I have personally seen them and have sometimes been forced to evade them while riding my motorbike,” one local resident said, calling for swift intervention.
