The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nandi County has launched investigations into the mysterious death of a form one student from Chemase secondary school in Tinderet sub-county.

Kelvin Kiptanui died on Friday evening while undergoing treatment at Nandi Hills sub-county hospital where he had been referred from Chepsese health centre after he complained of chest pains.

The school principal told police that the deceased was allegedly beaten in turns by two teachers at the institution on claims that he was caught cheating in the mid-term examinations.

It is alleged that he was found cheating together with another student while doing a Physics examination between 0830hrs and 0930hrs.

“The school management didn’t have any sickness report from the boy only to learn later that he had developed complications,” a police report indicates.

Confirming the incident, Tinderet OCPD, Mohammed Jire said his officers have already started probing the circumstances that led to the death of the student who was admitted at Chemase secondary school a few weeks ago.

“We will look into every allegation to establish the truth about the unfortunate incident and take appropriate action,” said Jire.

And on the claims of a cover-up by the institution, Jire said that a postmortem will be conducted on the body of the deceased to ascertain the cause of his death.

“If the post-mortem reveals the cause of death to be the beating from the said teachers then we shall prosecute them for murder,” assured the OCPD.

The administrator asked the family of the deceased and the members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigating agencies to complete their work and assured them that justice will be done to them.

On Sunday evening, students in the school were restless, demanding more explanation from the administration over the death of their colleague. The school has since been closed indefinitely.
