Successful Evacuation of Flood Victims in Baringo South

According to the Kenya Red Cross, approximately 1,048 flood victims from Longeiwan, Sintaan, and Eldume villages in Baringo South have been evacuated to safety in the last two days.

The organization announced this in a statement on Monday, May 6, 2024. The successful rescue operations have resulted in the safe evacuation of individuals affected by the floods in the mentioned villages in Baringo South.

“This was made possible with support from the National and County Government, community members, Savage Wilderness and the Kenya Red Cross,” Kenya Red Cross noted in a statement posted on X.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts in Sintaan, Baringo South

The Kenya Red Cross has reported that despite successful evacuations, there are still individuals stranded in Sintaan, Baringo South. Efforts are underway to evacuate them as well.

Government Measures to Assist Flood Victims

On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the Kenyan government outlined measures to aid flood victims in the country.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki disclosed that the government has established 138 camps across 18 counties, accommodating 62,061 flood victims. Kindiki highlighted that approximately 227,238 individuals have been affected by the heavy rains, with 1,967 schools suffering flood-related damage. Furthermore, he stated that 237 people have lost their lives, 164 have been injured, and 72 are reported missing due to heavy rains and floods.

The floods have displaced a total of 42,526 households, impacting around 212,630 people.
