One of the suspects connected to the death of a detective attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been shot dead.

The suspect, John Kamau alias Faruk and two others are accused of killing Detective David Mayanga as he was changing his tyre in the Mihango area on August 8, 2023.

While confirming the incident, Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei noted that John Kamau alias Faruk was killed on Tuesday morning during a dramatic shoot-out in an operation led by detectives from the elite crime research and Intelligence Bureau in Kayole, Nairobi.

The detectives had pitched camp at Faruk’s house at the crack of dawn ordering him to surrender, however, Faruk stormed out of his house firing his gun and shooting one of the officers

This prompted the detectives to retaliate and shoot the suspect killing him on the spot.

“This forced the other officers to fatally injure the suspect. We wanted him to face justice,” Bungei stated

The injured officer was rushed to a nearby health facility and is currently stable.

Detectives recovered the pistol that was used to kill Mayaka. At the time, the pistol was loaded with 12 bullets.

According to DCI boss Mohammed Amin, the pistol has been linked to five previous robbery incidents in
Nairobi.

Last week, detectives recovered a motorcycle believed to have been used to commit the heinous act, leading to the launch of a manhunt for the suspects.

Faruk was on the police radar for the past weeks after the unfortunate incident. So far detectives have arrested one other suspect who was seeking refuge at his grandmother’s house in Kikuyu, Kiambu.

Police are still looking for Henry Njihia who is also involved in the murder of Detective Mayaka.
