A suspected thief has escaped death narrowly after he was subjected to mob justice in Athi River.

Witnesses said the suspect was rounded up after he was allegedly caught stealing maize from a roadside plantation in the area.

“This is not the first time that he has been caught stealing,” one of the farmers said.

The early morning incident saw the irate mob descend on the suspect with kicks and blows.

“Were it not for some passers-by to intervene, the mob would have taken his life,” a witness told Citizen Digital.

Locals have in the meantime urged police to address cases of theft in the area.
