Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol receives congratulatory from senators after his impeachment by MCAs was quashed by Senate on Monday

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has weighed in on Senate’s decision to save Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol from impeachment.

In a statement on Monday shortly after the decision, Ledama wondered how the House could overturn the decision of the ad hoc committee.

He blamed the senators of politicising what he referred to as a criminal matter.

“We might as well suspend the Constitution and abuse the Constitution,” he said in a tweet.

“How does the Senate find the charges to have been substantiated especially on procurement charges and yet we allow politics to dominate?”

In its report, the 11-member committee chaired by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang endorsed Oduol’s removal from office.

It concluded that the deputy county boss was guilty of gross violation of the Constitution and abuse of office and gross misconduct.

“That the charge against the Deputy governor on gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, on the allegations of interference with the procurement through acts of bid rigging has been substantiated,” the committee noted in its report.

Senators, however, took different stances when the report was tabled before the Senate.

Kenya Kwanza legislators voted to dismiss the two charges against Oduol beating their Azimio counterparts who wanted the report endorsed.

The 27-16 vote result saved the DG, which means he will continue serving as the second in command to Governor James Orengo.

“The net effect of this vote is that the Senate has failed to remove from office by impeachment Hon William Oduol, the deputy governor of Siaya and that the DG continues to hold office,” Speaker Amason Kingi ruled after the vote.
