After a brief detention and interrogation by police on Sunday evening, Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been released on bail.

Lissu was apprehended in the country’s capital Arusha for holding an unlawful assembly for his party, Chadema, without a permit.

He was arrested alongside his aides among them his bodyguard and three other party leaders.

Reports further indicate that he had held rallies in the Ngorongoro conservation area and later near the northern town of Karatu where he was arrested.

Moments after his release, Lissu told the media that he had been ordered to avail himself at the police headquarters in Arusha today, September 11, to record a statement.

Since returning from exile in January Lissu has been holding political rallies across the country.

At those rallies, Lissu criticized President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration over the handling of a controversial ports management deal and human rights violations.

Lissu returned from exile after Hassan lifted a six-year ban on political rallies. He had been in Belgium where he fled in 2020 after losing a presidential election to John Magufuli.
