Taylor Swift has announced her endorsement of Kamala Harris for president, just after the conclusion of the presidential debate with Donald Trump. In an Instagram post on Tuesday night, Swift shared her decision, stating that she had done her “research.”
“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift wrote. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.” She praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader,” adding, “I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
Swift’s post included a photo of her with a cat, signed “Childless Cat Lady,” a nod to comments made by Donald Trump’s vice-presidential candidate JD Vance, who had previously referred to several prominent Democrats, including Harris, as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.”
Swift also expressed support for Harris’s vice-presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, praising his long-standing advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights. She mentioned that an AI-generated image falsely endorsing Trump on his website prompted her to publicly declare her voting choice, citing concerns about misinformation and the impact of AI.
Swift joins a list of celebrities endorsing Harris, which includes John Legend, Olivia Rodrigo, George Clooney, and Spike Lee. Meanwhile, Trump has received endorsements from figures such as Hulk Hogan, Amber Rose, and Elon Musk. Swift’s endorsement came after a contentious 90-minute debate where Harris and Trump clashed on topics such as abortion rights, the economy, and immigration.
This isn’t the first time Taylor Swift has endorsed a Democratic nominee in a race against Trump. Ahead of the 2020 election, she supported President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Swift was also outspoken against Trump during his presidency, particularly during the protests following the police killing of George Floyd.
She criticized Trump for his handling of white supremacy and racism, saying, “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? We will vote you out in November.”
With 283 million Instagram followers, Swift’s recent endorsement garnered over two million likes within just 30 minutes. In her post, she encouraged first-time voters to register and mentioned that she would provide a link with more voting information. “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice,” she stated. “Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
