Tenants of an apartment in in Kasarani Sub-County have vacated the building after it developed cracks. The tenants were asked to vacate the building which indicated signs of collapsing.

Area residents who spoke to Nairobi News said the building had already started sinking and it would be dangerous if the residents continued living there.

“Things, as we talk are very serious, the building had cracks and had started sinking. The best thing that they could do is just vacate,” Mr Ibrahim Karanja, a resident, said.

Ms Mary Achieng’, a tenant, said the house developed cracks when another developer started the foundation of another apartment.

“As heavy machinery were being used to lay the foundation, there were tremors were felt in our building. Moments later cracks developed in various parts of the apartment,” she said.

In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, Ms Achieng said she heard people shouting and screaming that the house was about to fall.

She immediately dressed up and rushed to the ground floor of the building where other tenants of the apartments had gathered.

“The landlord then came and attempted to persuade against vacating the building, saying there was nothing wrong with it. However, it was clear to us that the building had become an unsafe habitat,” Ms Achieng said.

The tenants who vacated the building lamented the hectic process of relocating on a short notice and under such circumstances.

On Wednesday, officials from the National Construction Authority (NCA) visited the site and barred members of the public from accessing it.
