Two police officers were beaten to death by a mob on Saturday evening in the Kanthanje area of Tharaka Nithi county.

The two officers had gone to an MPesa shop to arrest the operator when a disturbance started, according to the Deputy County Commissioner Julius Arap Too.

The MPesa attendant reportedly raised the alarm, claiming that the officers were thieves, prompting a mob to descend on the officers and beat them mercilessly.

The MPesa attendant is also said to have been injured during the Saturday evening incident and is currently being treated at Mater Hospital.

Area OCPD Joseph Muchiri stated that investigations are underway, but the victims have yet to be identified.
