The High Court has suspended the appointment of a new Deputy President just hours after the Senate upheld Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment. Justice Chacha Mwita stated that no appointments to replace Gachagua will take place until October 24. He classified the application filed by Senior Counsel Paul Muite as urgent and has remitted the file to Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Koome will be responsible for appointing a bench to hear and resolve the significant constitutional issues raised in the application. “In the meantime, a conservatory order is issued suspending the Senate resolution to uphold the impeachment charges against the Deputy President,” the judge announced.
The file will be sent to the Chief Justice for appropriate orders and further action. President William Ruto had nominated Kithure Kindiki to take over as Deputy President, and his appointment had already received approval from the Senate Assembly. More updates are expected to follow.
