Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who also holds the portfolio of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, revealed that President William Ruto has been extended an invitation to a summit aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Mudavadi made this announcement following a meeting with a delegation led by the Head of the European Union Delegation in Nairobi, Ambassador Henriette Geiger.
The summit, titled “Summit on Peace in Ukraine,” is slated to take place from June 15 to 16, 2024, in Switzerland. Mudavadi emphasized the significance of the summit and assured that the invitation extended to President Ruto would be carefully considered.
“Kenya is committed to a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and continues to appeal for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through a diplomatic dialogue,” Mudavadi said in a statement.
The summit aims to serve as a platform for high-level discussions addressing global concerns such as nuclear security, food security, freedom of navigation, and humanitarian issues.
Additionally, it seeks to foster a shared understanding among world leaders for achieving a comprehensive, just, and enduring peace in Ukraine, in accordance with the principles outlined in the UN Charter.
Moreover, the meeting intends to kickstart a peace process by initiating discussions, at the highest political level, on a roadmap for engaging both parties involved in the conflict. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine commenced in February 2014, following Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity.
Russia’s occupation and annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, as well as its support for pro-Russian separatists engaged in the Donbas War against the Ukrainian military, marked the initial phase of the conflict.
Over the first eight years, the conflict witnessed naval confrontations, cyber warfare, and escalating political tensions. However, in February 2022, Russia escalated the conflict by launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, subsequently occupying additional territory within the country.
Since this invasion, the war has exacted a devastating toll on civilian life, resulting in thousands of civilian casualties, injuries to many more, and widespread destruction of civilian property and infrastructure.
