The government has announced that Monday, June 17, will be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha (Idd-Ul-Azha). Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki made this declaration in a gazette notice dated June 14, 2024.
The notice states, “For the general information of the public, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, exercising the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Monday, the 17th of June 2024, as a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha.”
Eid-ul-Adha signifies the culmination of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city for Muslims. This pilgrimage, a mandatory religious duty, must be performed at least once in a lifetime by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable.
The essence of Eid-al-Adha lies in retracing the steps of the Prophet Mohammed and celebrating Muslims’ devotion to God. The day commemorates Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.
