The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert from Sunday, May 19 to Wednesday, May 22, warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large waves across the country.
Kenyans are advised to remain vigilant due to the potential for flash floods and rising water levels in water bodies.
The Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, are expected to experience rainfall levels exceeding 30 mm during this period. From Monday to Wednesday, rainfall levels in these areas may increase to 40 mm before tapering off on Wednesday.
In the coastal region, rainfall intensity is forecasted to rise from Wednesday, May 22 to Friday, May 24, accompanied by strong winds and large waves in the Indian Ocean, as well as strong winds in the eastern region.
Counties likely to be affected include Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.
Motorists are advised to avoid roads with high water levels to prevent accidents, and people in landslide-prone areas, especially hilly areas, should remain vigilant.
Strong winds may also cause damage to structures, including blowing off roofs and uprooting trees.
