Three arrested as NACADA raids Alfakheer and Embassy Club in shisha crackdown

Three people were arrested last night in a major crackdown on shisha use by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).

During the operation, officers confiscated 52 shisha bongs in coordinated raids targeting two popular entertainment spots in Nairobi.

The enforcement teams, led by NACADA’s Director of Enforcement and Compliance, Mr. James Koskey, raided Alfakheer Lounge on Mirema Drive and Embassy Club along Thika Road — both venues reportedly known for violating the nationwide shisha ban.

At Alfakheer Lounge, officers seized 10 shisha bongs and arrested one suspect. Meanwhile, at Embassy Club, the team recovered 42 shisha bongs, 56 assorted shisha flavours, and arrested two individuals.

These operations are part of NACADA’s intensified campaign to enforce the 2017 ban on the manufacture, importation, sale, and use of shisha in the country.

The ban was introduced after studies linked shisha smoking to serious health issues, including cancer, heart disease, respiratory complications, and nicotine addiction.

Speaking after the raids, Mr. Koskey reiterated the agency’s determination to stamp out illegal shisha use.

“Shisha is not only prohibited by law but also poses severe health dangers, especially to young people. We remain committed to enforcing the ban and safeguarding public health,” he said.

Last night’s crackdown adds to a series of similar operations in the city.

Despite the ongoing efforts, some establishments continue to sell and serve shisha covertly, prompting NACADA to increase surveillance and enforcement.

The authority has also called on the public to report any violations of the shisha ban through its toll-free number 1192.

“We cannot succeed without the public’s support. We urge citizens to help us identify and report individuals and establishments breaking the law,” Mr. Koskey added.

The suspects arrested in last night’s operation are expected to appear in court, where they will face charges related to the possession and distribution of shisha. NACADA has warned that establishments caught defying the ban risk closure and stiff penalties.
