Three children tragically lost their lives after a pit latrine collapsed at Queen of Angels Academy in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County, where they had gone to register at the school.
Emotions ran high as family members received news of the tragedy.
Emergency and rescue teams retrieved the bodies of the three ECDE pupils, with reports indicating that one child is still missing.
The incident was blamed on heavy rains that are said to have weakened the toilet structure.
According to Turbo Deputy County Commissioner Cheseto Charles, the latrine collapsed early on Thursday morning after a continuous downpour overnight.
“Hiyo choo ilikuwa imejengwa kwa njia mzuri, na it is caused by the heavy rain experienced,” said Turbo Assistant County Commissioner Charles Cheseto.
Community members are now demanding accountability and better infrastructure to prevent a repeat of similar incidents.
Parents and school stakeholders are blaming poor construction and negligence.
“Wajenzi tumekuwa walafi… tumekuwa watu wa kudanganya,” lamented a parent Josephat Ayora.
Another parent Mercy Chero added, “Hivo vyoo vya hao watoto wa chekechea ndio walimu pia wanatumia…”
The bodies of the deceased children were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret as investigations into the cause of the collapse continue.
