Three students from Moi University have been hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital after allegedly being shot during riots on Thursday night. The protests erupted following the university management’s decision to close the institution indefinitely. Among the injured are a first-year male student who suffered a ruptured kidney due to a gunshot, as well as third- and fifth-year students who sustained gunshot injuries.

The Moi University Students Organization (MUSO) Secretary General Cornelius Kipkoech and President Vincent Tarus visited their injured colleagues in the hospital, condemning the police’s excessive use of force in handling the unrest. They held the government and law enforcement responsible for the injuries.

Kipkoech called on President William Ruto to intervene and help save Moi University from collapse. Meanwhile, Noel Otieno, the chairperson for postgraduate students, expressed frustration over the indefinite closure, noting that students and their parents had paid fees but learning activities had been on hold for two months.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi acknowledged the riots but stated that investigations into the incident are ongoing to determine what transpired.
