The High Court is set to hear a case today challenging the ouster of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. Justice Bahati Mwamuye ordered the hearing to proceed in open court due to repeated disruptions by members of the public during virtual hearings. In the last court session, the Federation of Women Lawyers (FiDA) and the Council of Governors were enjoined as interested parties, and Jason Rukaria, a voter from Meru, was also allowed to participate in the case.
Governor Mwangaza obtained temporary orders to stop her impeachment, but the Senate has filed an application seeking to have those orders set aside. The case continues to draw significant attention as legal proceedings move forward.
In a separate matter, the High Court is expected to deliver its judgment on a case involving Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule and five other judges who are demanding an apology and compensation after being denied their jobs during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration. The six judges, who were rejected over integrity concerns, were later appointed when President William Ruto took office.
They are seeking to compel the state to publicly acknowledge that no evidence justified their disqualification. The case involves appellate court judges Muchelule, Weldon Korir, Joel Ngugi, and George Odunga, along with Environment and Lands Court judges Evans Makoti and Judy Omange.
