everal parts of Thika Road will be closed on Friday, September 5, 2025, ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup Qualifiers match between Harambee Stars and Gambia.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF), in a traffic advisory issued on Thursday, September 4, 2025, said police will enforce diversions along the busy highway from 6:00 am.

Several sections of Thika Road and feeder roads have been redirected to ease congestion around Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

“Kasaraní bound? Big match day means traffic changes! On Friday, 5th September 2025, from 6 AM, diversions will affect Thika Road and routes to MISC Kasarani. Please take note of the temporary diversions and use alternative roads and plan ahead,” FKF stated.

Thika Road diversions

Motorists heading to Ruiru, Juja, and Thika from Nairobi CBD have been advised to use Kiambu Road at exit 4. A roadblock will be mounted at Muthaiga.

Those travelling from Thika Road heading towards Mwiki have been advised to use the Ruaka-Baba Dogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River-Mwiki route.

Motorists heading towards Nairobi CBD from the general direction of Thika, Juja, and Ruiru have been advised to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, with police expected to mount a roadblock at the Ruiru interchange.

Those travelling from Githurai heading towards Nairobi CBD have been advised to use the Githurai 44-Kiambu Road route, while those who will be heading to Kasarani Stadium from the Nairobi CBD direction, but without the vehicle access passes, have been advised to use the service lane at exits 7 and 8.

All motorists have been urged to cooperate with police officers on site to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

FKF further noted that additional police officers have been deployed, and stern action will be taken against anyone who violates the traffic rules.

“THE NATIONAL POLICE SERVICE CONTINUES TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH RELEVANT AGENCIES AND URGES ALL MOTORISTS TO COOPERATE WITH OFFICERS ON-SITE TO ENSURE SMOOTH TRAFFIC FLOW. ADDITIONAL POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED AND WILL TAKE STERN ACTION AGAINST ANYONE VIOLATING TRAFFIC RULES,” the statement read.

This is not the first time Thika Road has faced traffic disruptions when a football match is being held at Kasarani Stadium. During the just-concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, similar disruptions were witnessed.
