Tragedy struck Mutitu village in Mathira Constituency on Tuesday evening after two children perished in a house fire that has left residents in shock and mourning.
The fire reportedly broke out around 7 p.m., engulfing the family home while the children slept.
Despite desperate attempts by neighbors to extinguish the flames, an 8-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister died in the blaze.
According to family members, the incident has raised more questions than answers, as no fire had been lit in the house at the time.
“There was a huge fire at home yesterday and my cousin’s children perished,” said Wizzy Chris, a relative of the victims, while speaking to Inooro TV.
“We were returning from the hospital after picking up their mother who had been discharged when we received a call that the house was on fire.”
A third child, a Grade 9 girl who was also in the house, managed to escape and sound the alarm, alerting neighbours who rushed to help but were too late to save the younger siblings.
The family is now urging authorities to launch a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
“We are asking authorities to investigate this matter as no fire had been lit in the house, and we are wondering how the fire even started,” a family member added.
