According to a police report obtained by Citizen.Digital, the accident occurred when the bus driver attempted to overtake a fleet of cars and collided with an oncoming Matatu, which swerved to the side to avoid a collision but was struck on the side.
“The driver of motor vehicle Registration KCP 045F which was heading towards Naivasha general direction suddenly overtook a fleet of vehicles,which made the driver of motor vehicle Registration KDH 330E swerve to the left to avoid colliding head on but unfortunately the bus rammed on the right side body pushing it to the ditch,” the police report explains.
The Northrift shuttle Matatu was carrying ten passengers at the time of the accident. Two people are said to have died on the spot, while several others who were injured were taken to St. Marys Hospital.
Meanwhile, several passengers on the Eldoret Express bus sustained minor injuries as a result of the impact on the right front side.
Among the injured was a police officer attached to GSU Embakasi who sustained a cut on the forehead.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Gilgil sub-county hospital mortuary pending investigations into the incident.
