A Narok court on Wednesday detained two people in custody for 21 days after they were charged with the rape and murder of a first-year student at Maasai Mara University.

The two, Brian Kimutai Bepco and John Mwangi Kashu, were the last people seen with the victim at an entertainment spot in Narok before she was reported missing on April 30, 2023.

Bepco is in fourth-year student at Maasai Mara University and he was named as the first accused person while Kashu was named the second accused in the case.

According to court documents, the deceased Adah Nyambura was reported as a missing person at the Narok Police Station on April, 30, 2023 by her boyfriend in the morning hours and in the evening, her body was discovered in Macedonia area within Narok Township, indicating that she had been raped and murdered.

The Narok Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel Duncan Ondimu from the Directorate of Public Prosecution told the court that they have extracted necessary samples from the body for forensic examination.

He said that there is also a need to interview several witnesses, including university students, who saw the deceased person before she was killed.

The court requested that the two accused persons be held in custody for 21 days to prevent interference with the ongoing investigations. The court has granted the request, stating that the accused persons are a flight risk.

The court also heard that the first accused person Bepco, had previously been suspended by Maasai Mara University for disciplinary issues and was found with a mobile phone handset belonging to the deceased.

Both his phone and that of the deceased will be subjected to forensic examination at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters. The case will be mentioned on May 23, 2023.
