Police in Siaya County on Tuesday arrested two women following a crackdown on illicit brew, narcotics and contraband goods at Sirima village in Ugenya sub-county.

The officers from Ukwala Police Station raided the home of 50-year-old Pamela Atieno in Sirima village where they recovered 60 litres of kangara.

Acting on a tip-off, they then proceeded to the home of 24-year-old Beryl Atieno and recovered 17 litres of chang’aa, 16 rolls of bhang, 100 litres of kangara and 16 sticks of unaccustomed cigarettes.

Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed the raid saying the two women were arrested and locked up at Ukwala Police Station pending their arraignment in court after analysis of the exhibits by the government chemist.

He warned against the trade of illegal liquor, noting that the crackdown will continue until the area is made free of such unlawful businesses.

Mr. Kimaiyo took the opportunity to urge members of the public to look for alternative ways of generating income, noting that engaging in crime does not pay.
