Two women who have been linked to illicit liquor that killed two people at Kanjogu village in Mwea, Kirinyaga county will remain in police custody for 14 days as authorities probe the matter.

This comes after the Baricho Law Courts approved the prosecution’s miscellaneous application to detain Lydia Wanjiru Mbokothe and Jane Wambui Munywauki at Kiamaciri police station for 14 days.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Franklin Gitandu Gatimu (48) and Nicholas Maina Kamonde (60) died after consuming the suspected illicit brew from Muiguru Bar.

The establishment is owned by the suspects.

The matter is scheduled for mention on March 7, 2024.

Meanwhile, residents of Kandongu village are still in mourning after two people died on Wednesday after consuming a suspected illicit brew.

Two other people are said to have gone temporarily blind and were treated at a nearby facility.

The Wednesday incident occurred just a week after 17 people died in the same county after consuming suspected illicit spirits, prompting calls for a crackdown on unscrupulous business owners.

Among those who died were six family members who were part of a merrymaking spree that turned tragic.
