Former President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in South Africa on Saturday, May 25, 2024, to assume the role of leading election observers for the country’s upcoming general elections on May 29.

The African Union Commission (AUC) appointed Uhuru to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the General Elections in South Africa.

Upon his arrival at Oliver Tambo International Airport, Uhuru was warmly received by High Commissioner Jane Ndurumo and officials of the African Union (AU).

The South African electorate will participate in voting to elect a new National Assembly and the Provincial Legislature in each of the nine provinces. As the head of election observers, Uhuru will lead a team of experts and observers tasked with monitoring various aspects of the electoral process.
