Former President Uhuru Kenyatta paid tribute to Maina Wanjigi during his funeral in Nyeri on Saturday, July 6, 2024. The tribute, read by his brother Muhoho Kenyatta, described Wanjigi as a dedicated leader and patriot whose contributions to the country’s development have left a lasting impact on society.

The former Head of State highlighted Wanjigi’s commitment to the people of Kamukunji and his leadership in establishing the Gikomba Market in Nairobi, which has significantly contributed to the country’s economy through trade.

“It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of our esteemed elder statesman, the former cabinet minister James Maina Wanjigi. James Wanjigi was not only a remarkable leader but also a true patriot whose dedication to the development of our nation has left an indelible mark on our society,

“His unwavering commitment to the people of Kamukunji and his visionary leadership were instrumental in founding and development of the iconic Gikomba Market in Nairobi which continues to serve as a bustling hub for traders and shoppers alike,” the tribute read my Muhoho states.

At the same time, Uhuru acknowledged that as the father of Kamukunji settlers, Wanjigi’s efforts have created employment opportunities for several Kenyans who continue to enjoy the opportunities for a better life.

“As the father of Kamukunji settlers, his efforts have provided countless families with opportunities for a better life. Wanjigi’s future is further enshrined in the establishment of the renowned Jua Kali industry in Shauri Moyo, which provided countless artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs with livelihoods and contributed significantly to the growth of the informal sector and the overall economy,” he said.

“As a dedicated public servant, honourable Wanjigi served as a Member of Parliament for Kamukunji for over 25 years succeeding the late Tom Mboya in 1969, his tenure was marked by steadfast commitment to the welfare of his constituents and to the development of Kamukunji. His exemplary service set a high standard for leadership and community engagement.”

The former president further extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and his friends, wishing him eternal peace as his soul rests.

“As we mourn the loss of this great son of Kenya, we celebrate his remarkable life and the contributions he made to our country.
