A Kenyan man living in Nottingham, England, has died unexpectedly in his sleep, leaving his wife, children and an entire community in shock just hours after he had been in high spirits at a gathering with loved ones.
David Gitonga, a resident of Nottingham, reportedly passed away in his sleep after an evening of fun with friends and relatives.
Community United in Grief The evening before, he had been very much alive and cheerful, sharing a BBQ and Mugithi celebration with family and friends.
By all accounts, those who saw him that night had no reason to worry. He went to bed as normal, but his wife woke to find he had died during the night.
Doctors later confirmed that David suffered a fatal heart attack in his sleep. What made the news even harder to bear was that he had no known underlying health conditions and appeared fit and well right up until his final hours.
David’s sudden passing has left an enormous void not only within his immediate family but also among the broader Kenyan community in Nottingham and beyond.
David Gitonga’s Funeral Plans
Friends and family members have been meeting regularly to coordinate arrangements and support his household through this painful time.
His funeral is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2026. The church service will be held at St. Margaret’s Church on Aspley Lane, Nottingham NG8 5GE, from 10:30 am to 1 pm.
Burial will follow at Highwood Cemetery on Low Wood Road, Nottingham NG6 7GA, from 1:45 pm to 3 pm. A wake will then be held at the Marcus Garvey Community Centre from 4 pm to 11 pm.
Free parking is available at all three venues. The family has suggested black with an optional touch of purple as the theme colour for those attending.
