A Kenyan content creator has raised the alarm after receiving a suspicious email telling him he had won a US Green Card, despite never having applied for one.

Eric Mboya shared the email on Facebook on Monday, September 13, warning his followers to stay alert. In the post, he wrote that the message came with a PDF attachment and urged people not to open it. “I received this email that nimeshinda Green Card.

But I never applied for one, and I have never been interested. In the email, they have attached a PDF which I should open. Hapo ndio kuna maneno. Ukipata such email, usifungue PDF,” he wrote.

Mboya also pointed out one of the clearest giveaways: the sender’s address was not from a legitimate government domain.

He noted that official US government communications related to the Diversity Visa programme end with .gov, while the email he received came from a suspicious address using gmail.com and a fake domain.

The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is a legitimate US government programme open to nationals of eligible countries, including Kenya.

For the DV-2026 cycle, 3,949 Kenyans were selected as potential winners. However, selection alone does not guarantee a Green Card. Winners must still go through medical examinations, interviews, and vetting processes before any visa is issued. All DV-2026 visas must be issued by 30 September 2026.

Critically, the US government does not notify winners by email or text message.

The only way to confirm selection is through the official DV programme portal using a personal confirmation number. Entering the lottery is also completely free, meaning any message asking for payment should be treated as a scam.

The DV-2027 Green Card lottery application dates are yet to be announced, with applicants urged to rely on official US government updates.
