Tom Odege, the Secretary General of the Union of Kenya Civil Servants, has urged the government to allocate funds for salary increases for civil servants as previously agreed, warning that workers will strike next month if this is not addressed.

Odege stated that civil servants expect a salary raise and emphasized that the government must comply with the legal requirements. He argued that the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) does not have the authority to prevent salary increments, as the issue was settled in court and can only be reversed by the same court.

“It is unacceptable for the SRC to claim it can defer a salary increment,” he said. Odege, who is also the Member of Parliament for Nyatike constituency, reiterated that civil servants anticipate salary increases and will not accept any excuses from the government.

He noted that the salary increment was included in the budget for the last financial year and should not be tied to the withdrawn Finance Bill 2024, which followed nationwide protests.
