University of Nairobi students and staff getting meals from the university kitchens will now be required to make payments through the e-Citizen platform.
This is according to a directive from the Kenya Kwanza government to the university, that all payments to the institution be made through the government online portal.
Subsequently, the university issued a memo a week ago to all students and staff, giving instructions and processes on how to make the payments.
“The Kenyan Government has mandated that all payments to the University of Nairobi be made via the E-Citizen platform. Complying with this directive, the University has established the required systems to enable clients to make payments through E-Citizen. To pay for services, please follow the instructions provided below,” reads the memo seen by Citizen Digital, issued by the VC through the corporate affairs office.
It instructed the payment to be made through paybill number 222222, after which a user will enter Outlet/Live identifier in capital letters followed by a hyphen and name (e.g. NUK1-name) as account number.
The university went on to give further payment details (Outlet/Live Identifiers) for different kitchens.
The directive applies to different kitchens in the main campus and other satellite campuses within Nairobi.
The latest directives come a month after the government completed moving all its services to the e-Citizen platform, where anyone seeking to access government services will be required to part with a certain amount of money.
The government, through Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u in December 2023 announced the introduction of access fees for government services on the e-Citizen platform.
In a gazette notice, Ndung’u stated that those seeking to access services on the platform shall be required to pay a nominal administrative fee per transaction.
The services and charges are as follows;
  • Below Ksh.199 will be charged at Ksh.5
  • Between Ksh.200 – Ksh.299 at Ksh.10
  • Between Ksh.300 – Ksh.499 at Ksh.15
  • Between Ksh.500 – Ksh.699 at Ksh.20
  • Between Ksh.700 – Ksh.999 at Ksh.25
  • Over Ksh.1000 – Ksh.50
Any dollar amount at US dollar (Ksh.156 in current exchange rates)
