Machakos MCAs have raised concerns following the alleged disappearance of their colleague, Muthwani Ward Member of County Assembly, Dominic Maitha, under mysterious circumstances.
The leaders say the beleaguered MCA has not been seen for over 24 hours, prompting fears about his safety.
Speaking outside the Machakos County Assembly, Kinanie MCA Francis Kavyu, along with his Mbiuni counterpart Peter Kilonzo, urged Maitha’s abductors to release him immediately.
They accused the county government and Governor Wavinya Ndeti of being behind his abduction, owing to his recent threat of tabling an impeachment motion against her.
“We wish to bring to the attention of the public about the disappearance of one of our colleagues, Dominic Maitha Ndonye, Muthwani MCA, who from yesterday his whereabouts have been unknown. Last week, he spoke heavily concerning the issue of impeachment of the Machakos governor. For the last 15 hours, the MCA has been missing; his family and friends have not been able to trace him since his two phones are off,” Kavyu said.
“We’ve made frantic calls and have no leads. We appeal to the public and security forces to fast-track where he is…The county government must know where he is and they have to tell us because there has been a lot of tension due to the issue of Speaker impeachment.”
The pressing concern comes on the heels of mounting political tensions within the Machakos County Assembly emanating from a faction of MCAs recently signing an impeachment motion against Assembly Speaker Ann Kiusya. There had been claims that around 30 MCAs had retreated to Mombasa in preparation for the impending vote scheduled for Friday.
The missing MCA who spoke last week during a bursary issuance event in Ngalalya publicly threatened to push for Governor Ndeti’s impeachment, citing various allegations, including misuse of funds and employment irregularities.
He also accused the county boss of being behind the plot to oust the assembly speaker, adding that she had bribed a majority of the MCAs to support the motion.
“I want to state that you have refused to listen, umetudharau, and now that you have engineered to table an impeachment motion against Machakos Speaker, I am saying and repeating that next week I will sponsor an impeachment motion against you,” he said.
“You can use the stolen funds to bribe MCAs, but I want to assure you that the speaker is going nowhere. We have enough evidence to show that Governor Wavinya has failed, and she cannot manage the work in Machakos, her work ni kuiba.”
MCA Maitha referred to the recent impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, saying, “You are not exceptional, Governor Kawira alipodharau MCAs wa Meru, saa hii ako nyumbani. It is not too late to remove you kwa sababu hausaidii wananchi. In Muthwani Ward, we collect almost Ksh.5 million daily from quarries; in a month, that is Ksh.150 million, in a year, that is more than Ksh.1 billion, excluding the money from the government. What is there to be proud of in this Ward within that time?”
He warned the governor, adding, “You are not exempt from repercussions,” and highlighting what he claimed to be impeachable offences, including the much-criticized Machakos Youth Service project—allegedly allocated Ksh.800 million without legal endorsement.
