Residents of Konoin area in Bomet are concerned about monkey invasion on their farms.

According to the residents, the vervet monkeys have been destroying their crops for months now.

Most of the affected villages are said to be located in the vast Koiwa and Kaptien tea estates.

The residents, mostly tea factory workers who cultivate small portions of land near the tea villages, often grow crops such as carrot, cabbages, peppers, kales, potatoes and other crops for use at home and for sale.

The monkeys are said to be coming from the forested sections of the tea estates.

“The monkeys always move in large numbers and from different directions to feast on our crops. They are so many that it’s impossible to stop them,” said Kipkurui Misoi.

“We have been forced to use extra hours protecting the crops. One can’t even go to the local shopping centre to unwind after work,” said Misoi.
