Vincent Gakuhi, a teenage cancer survivor from Nairobi’s Ruai area, has been placed at Kenyatta University (KU) to study Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, months after scoring an A plain in the 2025 KCSE while fighting cancer.

He shared his Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) results on TikTok, captioning the moment with the words “long time coming” — a phrase that carries particular weight given the journey he had to endure just to sit his exams.

Gakuhi’s path to university was anything but straightforward.

He sat his national examinations while recovering from multiple surgeries linked to his cancer diagnosis, a reality that made his eventual A plain one of the most celebrated results from the 2025 KCSE cycle.

His mother, who had publicly blown him kisses online after his results emerged, became one of the most recognisable faces of parental pride that season.

Following his results, Gakuhi spent time while awaiting his placement, a detail that underscored both his resilience and the financial pressures facing many high-achieving students in Kenya before university fees and placement are confirmed.

What are KUCCPS placement data?

His KUCCPS placement data shows degree cluster weights across multiple subject groupings, with scores ranging from 43.918 to 45.495, reflecting the competitive threshold for admission into the MBChB programme.

The placement into one of the most sought-after medical courses in the country marked the culmination of years of academic effort carried out under extraordinary personal circumstances.

For a young man who spent significant periods of his secondary school years in and out of medical care, being placed to train as a doctor carries an added layer of meaning.
