A video suggesting that Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino was arrested at the Jomo Konyatta International Airport on Wednesday is not true.

The video has since gone viral on social media platforms amid reports on the arrest of the MP.

However, Citizen Digital has confirmed that it is an old video, taken on September 27, 2017.

The incident happened at the Milimani Law Courts, where Babu Owino had been arraigned, facing charges of subversion and offensive conduct as well as an alternative charge of incitement to violence.

On the said date, police re-arrested Babu Owino moments after he was set free by a Nairobi magistrate court.

Then, police said Babu was re-arrested in connection to an assault offence he committed when vying for the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman position earlier.

However, on Wednesday morning, the MP said on his Facebook page that he had been arrested.

“Have been detained by the DCI JKIA after my arrival from Mombasa. Currently under arrest,” he wrote.

Citizen Digital has since reached out to the MP for a comment, but his phone could not go through.

The alleged arrest comes amid planned anti-government protests, sanctioned by Azimio la Umoja coalition.
