The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has refuted claims of negotiating with President William Ruto to form a government of National Unity.
In a statement on Tuesday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna emphasized that the party is not engaged in any political arrangements with the current administration. He stated that any ODM member who seeks to join President Ruto’s cabinet is doing so without the party’s endorsement.
“We want to make it clear that we are not in negotiations with the Ruto regime for any coalition or political arrangement,” Sifuna said. “Any ODM member who decides to join the Kenya Kwanza cabinet or take on any other role does so without the Party’s support.”
Sifuna reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its principles and the ongoing quest for justice and reform in Kenya. He accused some individuals of spreading misinformation to suggest ODM is eager to join the government, and misinterpreting the party’s stance as an invitation to seek positions within the Ruto administration.
He reiterated that ODM is focused on initiating a national conversation, contingent upon the fulfillment of certain conditions.
Last week, ODM outlined four key demands: compensation for victims of extra-judicial executions and injuries caused by the state since last year, the release of all detainees related to protests, prosecution of police officers involved in violent actions against protesters, and the dismissal of Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei.
The party remains committed to addressing long-standing governance issues, as highlighted by Gen Z. “Our commitment to this cause is unwavering, recognizing the urgent need for transformative change in our nation,” Sifuna concluded.
