The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied links to the abduction of Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull.
This after Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah alleged that Kibet was abducted after leaving his office on December 24, 2024, adding that he saw Subaru vehicles outside his office on the said date when he was meeting Kibet among other people interested in his presidential plans.
“I believe he was abducted by DCI officers, as soon as he arrived at my office my security detail told me they were monitoring a Subaru which was mounted with spy gadgets used to intercept communications. It was parked across the road from my office. It stayed at that location and left after Mr. Kibet left,” Omtatah said.
He added that on learning of the abduction, his team conducted a search on the mysterious vehicle on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) where it emerged that it belonged to a person named Caroline.
In a swift rebuttal, DCI said that the vehicle in question does not have ties to them and that the allegations are “not only unfounded but also sensationalizes a sensitive issue that is currently under thorough investigation.”
“The Inspector General (IG) has clearly stated that all police operations are conducted within the confines of the Constitution and established legal frameworks. The DCI supports this stance and reassures the public that no extrajudicial actions will be tolerated within our ranks,” said the DCI.
The investigative branch added that they are committed to probe the rising cases of abductions, calling on individuals with any information on the abductions to avail themselves to police officers.
As of December 26, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported 7 abduction cases in December 2024 with six of them still missing.
They include Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Billy Wanyiri Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Naomi (found), Rony Kiplang’at and Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull.
KNCHR added that thirteen more cases of abductions or enforced disappearances have been recorded in the last three months bringing to 82 the total cases since June 2024 during the anti-government protests.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has said that police officers are not responsible for the ensuing abductions.
