Kenya Prisons’ head coach Dennis Mokua says they are confident of defending their men’s premier league title this season despite tasting defeats against Kenya Ports Authority and General Service Unit in recent times.
The reigning champions were on fire during last season’s playoffs as they reclaimed their title but have lost one game in the league against the Dockers where they were forced into five sets and eventually losing 3-2 in a nervy ending contest, during the second leg of the KVF league.
The feat almost repeated in the just concluded leg at Malaba Stadium in Busia where Trail Blazers forced them into four sets in a thrilling encounter that was disrupted by heavy rains forcing it to be rescheduled. The tie ended at 2-2.
Mokua who doubles up as Wafalme Stars assistant coach says they will work on their weaknesses as they eye a playoff and a subsequent deep run in the post season.
“We are confident and we are ready to fight until the end. The competition is tough but we will give in our best. We have a few areas we are still working on like reception, blocks and back of defence but I’m sure we will grow and become good. Our aim is storming the playoffs then we can focus on defending our title,” said Mokua.
Prisons are yet to play an impeccable GSU in the regular season and they know they will be in for a rude shock having already lost 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-22) in the Dr. Arthur Odera’s Tournament on Sunday.
They currently sit second on the log with 24 points, six behind leaders GSU.
