The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has dismissed claims of plans to shut down the internet ahead of and during Tuesday’s anti-Finance Bill protests. In a notice, CA Director General David Mugonyi acknowledged the fears raised by Kenyans regarding the matter but assured that the government has no such plans.
“The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has received inquiries regarding an imminent Internet shutdown on Tuesday, 25th June 2024,” Mugonyi said in a press release.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Authority has no intention whatsoever to shut down internet traffic or interfere with the quality of connectivity.”
Mugonyi stated that such actions would amount to a betrayal of the Constitution as a whole. He added that it would also violate the freedom of expression and the Authority’s ethos. Furthermore, he emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the digital economy thrives, and shutting down the internet would reverse the gains made in the sector.
“Further, such actions would also sabotage our fast-growing digital economy as Internet connectivity supports thousands of livelihoods across the country,” he said.
“However, we urge Kenyans to use the digital space with respect to all and within the confines of the law.”
